Only "permissible fireworks" (non-aerial, non-explosive) are legal statewide, and only where local law allows — many Colorado cities and counties ban all consumer fireworks. Municipalities and counties may impose further restrictions and prohibitions on sale, use and possession, and drought fire bans can prohibit use entirely (C.R.S. 24-33.5-2001, 24-33.5-2002(5), 24-33.5-2007).

Consumer fireworks are legal statewide in Iowa (legalized 2017), but use is limited to June 1–July 8 and December 10–January 3, generally 9:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. (later around July 4 and New Year's) (Iowa Code § 727.2). Use is also heavily local-option: many cities and counties restrict or ban discharge, and using them where a local ordinance prohibits it is a simple misdemeanor with a fine of at least $250. Since 2025 (SF 303) local governments may not ban use on July 3, July 4 and December 31.
