North Dakota Duty to Inform Police Laws (2026)
Conditional: Tell any officer who contacts you in person that you are carrying a concealed firearm.
Tell any officer who contacts you in person that you are carrying a concealed firearm. The statute requires this when the officer asks, but the Attorney General's guidance says to inform on any in-person contact, so follow the stricter rule. Carry your driver's license or state ID and show it on request. A violation is a noncriminal offense with a $20 fee. Licensees must carry the license and hand it over on request.

- MinnesotaConditional
Minnesota has no proactive duty to inform, but a permit holder must have the permit card and a photo ID when carrying and must display them on lawful demand (Minn. Stat. § 624.714 subd. 1b(a), a petty misdemeanor), and at an officer's request must disclose whether they are currently carrying (subd. 1b(d)). Minnesota requires a carry permit, so these rules cover all lawful public carriers.

- MontanaInfo
Montana has no law requiring you to tell an officer you are armed, and no rule to show a permit on demand. If you carry under another state's permit, that permit is valid in Montana only if you have it in your immediate possession and also carry official photo ID.

- South DakotaInfo
South Dakota has no statutory duty to inform: the state has had permitless concealed carry since July 1, 2019, and nothing in SDCL chapter 23-7 requires a carrier to notify an officer or to produce a permit on demand. Optional regular, enhanced, and gold-card permits exist mainly for reciprocity.
