Michigan has no statewide burn ban, but open debris burning is NOT PERMITTED ANYWHERE in 6 northern counties today on the DNR's daily Burn Permits map (map data of October 16, 2026): Alger, Alpena, Marquette, Montmorency, Presque Isle and Schoolcraft. In 9 more counties the map shows burn-permit restrictions in effect: Bay, Charlevoix, Clare, Delta, Grand Traverse, Houghton, Leelanau, Muskegon and Roscommon - select your county on the map to see the restrictions for your township. In 34 counties (Alcona, Antrim, Arenac, Baraga, Benzie, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Crawford, Dickinson, Emmet, Gladwin, Gogebic, Iosco, Iron, Isabella, Kalkaska, Keweenaw, Lake, Luce, Mackinac, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Menominee, Midland, Missaukee, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Ontonagon, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego and Wexford) the map shows open burning permitted with proper precautions. Since the October 15, 2026 map, Baraga, Gogebic, Iron, Keweenaw and Ontonagon moved from not permitted to permitted with precautions, and Houghton moved from not permitted to restricted. The other 34 counties, in southern Michigan, are outside the DNR electronic burn-permit system; burning there is handled by your local authorities. The map changes DAILY: a "YES" in the Burning Permits Issued column for your township is your permit for that day, a "NO" means no open debris burning is allowed there, and state law requires a permit before you burn debris. Restrictions are set county by county and township by township; check the DNR burn-permit map for your township before you burn.
