Kentucky Sunday Alcohol Sales (2026)
Conditional: There is no single statewide rule — Kentucky alcohol hours are local-option, and they depend on your city or county AND your license type.
There is no single statewide rule — Kentucky alcohol hours are local-option, and they depend on your city or county AND your license type. Statutory baseline in wet territory, absent a local ordinance: 6 a.m. to midnight Monday-Saturday, and Sunday sales prohibited. KRS 244.290(3) covers distilled spirits and wine; beer is governed separately by KRS 244.480(2). Local governments can move this in BOTH directions: by ordinance they may extend hours past midnight and may authorize Sunday sales (package and by-the-drink are authorized separately, KRS 244.290(4)(a)-(b) and 244.480(4)(a)-(b)), but they may not cut below 6 a.m.-midnight on non-Sundays. They may also restrict sales during polling hours on election days. Sunday sales can additionally come from a local option election (KRS Ch. 242), a limited sale precinct election (KRS 242.1241), a small farm winery (KRS 244.290(5)), or — in Jefferson County/Louisville — a Sunday by-the-drink license effective from 1 p.m. (KRS 244.290(6)). Late-night by-the-drink service requires an extended hours supplemental license under KRS 243.050 plus a local ordinance. In dry or moist territory under KRS Chapter 242, retail sales are prohibited or restricted every day of the week. Louisville example (Metro Code 113.40): package 6 a.m.-midnight Mon-Sat and 1 p.m.-11:59 p.m. Sunday, extendable to 2 a.m. with the supplemental license; retail drink extendable to 4 a.m. with it. The 4 a.m. figure is Louisville by-the-drink only — it is not a statewide time and package stores never reach it. Verify with your city or county ABC administrator.
